Finding information with which to vet potential new hires has long been the traditional use for criminal record reports. However, as this information has migrated into the online environment, more and more people are finding they have use for these records.  What can a person’s criminal record be used for?  How can these records help people other than employers?  Actually, criminal records can be used for a wide variety of different things, making these records invaluable to the population at large.

For instance, homeowners with second or even third homes often find it necessary to rent out their homes in order to obtain additional funds.  However, short of hiring a company to vet each potential renter, the process can be quite “hit and miss.”  However, when you judge a potential renter based on his or her criminal record, you can ensure that you are letting the right person into that home.  The consequences of doing otherwise can be incredibly detrimental and can put the safety of that home in jeopardy. As an example, unverified renters can cause damage to the home, can bring in a criminal element to the home and neighborhood and can wreak havoc with your investment.

Another area in which a persons’ criminal record is becoming more and more important is that of dating.  As our world moves inexorably into the digital domain, dating has become a difficult endeavor. How do you know that your new love interest is who he or she says they are?  Not checking into their criminal past can lead to some very nasty surprises and can even put you in harm’s way.  Making use of their criminal record can allow you to inspect their past and check for any items of interest or that might indicate potential problems in a long-term relationship with that person.

Finally, a person’s criminal record can also be used to help protect your family.  Suppose new neighbors move into your neighborhood. They seem friendly enough, but something piques your curiosity.  You can learn more about your new neighbors by using their criminal record and other information available to the public.  This can help ensure that your family is safe from any predators that might seek to take advantage of them.  As you can see, the criminal record is no longer the province only of employers and has tremendous ramifications for almost anyone.
